El Monte Union Celebrates Inaugural Summer Graduation, Honors Students Who Persevered to Earn Their Diplomas

Twenty-four El Monte Union students celebrated the successful completion of their high school journey during the District's inaugural summer graduation ceremony on July 17, crossing the stage to receive diplomas they earned through determination and the completion of summer school.
 
Held in Mountain View High School's newly renovated cafetorium on the final day of summer school, the ceremony recognized graduates from Arroyo, El Monte, Fernando R. Ledesma, Mountain View, Rosemead, and South El Monte high schools. Balloon arches in each school's colors framed the stage as families, friends, and educators applauded graduates, captured photos, and celebrated a moment many had waited weeks to experience.
 
"This ceremony honors our students and the commitment they showed in reaching this important milestone," Superintendent Dr. Edward Zuniga said. "Each graduate remained focused on their goal, completed the work required to earn a diploma, and deserved the opportunity to walk across the stage surrounded by the people who supported them along the way."
 
Arroyo High School graduate Jayden Cevallo led the Pledge of Allegiance and his classmates in the turning of the tassel ceremony. El Monte High School graduate Brithany Torres and Mountain View High School graduate Roxana Ponce Castanon shared inspiring speeches reflecting on gratitude and the perseverance that brought the Class of 2026 to the finish line.
 
"As we gather here today, all I can see is our collective struggles and efforts being rewarded," Torres said. "No matter the backgrounds or challenges we faced, we accomplished something many once thought was out of reach. My high school experience was far from easy because of a medical condition that interrupted my studies, but this achievement reflects my resilience, grit, and dedication. On behalf of my graduating class, thank you to our teachers, families, and friends for your endless support."
 
One by one, graduates crossed the stage to cheers from loved ones, as families marked the occasion with diploma presentations, cap-and-gown photos, and the celebration of a long-awaited triumph.
 
The graduates completed their remaining graduation requirements through the District's summer school program, earning the opportunity to participate in a commencement ceremony with their families and classmates. The inaugural celebration underscored El Monte Union's commitment to ensuring every student who earns a diploma also has the opportunity to experience the traditions that come with graduation.

"It saddened us to think some of our students wondered whether they would ever have the opportunity to walk across the stage," Board of Trustees President Florencio Briones said. "Tonight, we celebrate you because you came back, completed your requirements, and earned this moment. Life doesn't always follow the timeline we expect, but your determination brought you here. Congratulations from our entire El Monte Union community."
