California State Seal of Biliteracy

The California State Seal of Biliteracy (SSB), became effective January 1, 2012. This program recognizes high school graduates who have attained proficiency in English and in at least one other world language by high school graduation. The State Seal of Biliteracy is awarded by the State Superintendent of Public Instruction in accordance with specified criteria set forth in Assembly Bill (AB) 815  (Brownley, Chapter 618, Statutes of 2011), which was amended in 2017 per AB 1142.

By awarding the State Seal of Biliteracy, the El Monte Union High School District seeks to:

encourage our students to develop and maintain multilingual skills;

recognize and honor our students’ rich and diverse langauge assets;

promote the development of language and cultural appreciation and cross-cultural understanding;

recognize our student’ attainment of bilingual and biliteracy skills’ and, 

provide employers with a method of identifying future employees with bilingual and biliteracy skills.
