Dear El Monte Union Community,

The El Monte Union High School District is saddened to learn of the passing of former Superintendent David Richard Sandell, who died peacefully on November 24, 2025, at the age of 89.

Sandell dedicated his professional life to public education and service. During his distinguished career, he served the District as both principal of El Monte High School and later as superintendent, leaving a lasting impact on students, staff, and the greater community. He was also a teacher and coach, known for inspiring students through his commitment to learning, teamwork, and integrity.

Following his retirement, Sandell continued his service to El Monte Union as a dedicated ambassador for the District. He spearheaded Measure Y, the District’s first general obligation bond measure, which successfully passed and helped advance long-term improvements for our schools.

Beyond education, Sandell proudly served nine years in the Air National Guard and was deeply devoted to his family, whom he cherished above all else.

He is survived by his wife, Janet Sandell; his daughters, Coleen Bevilacqua, Michelle Bradshaw and Stephanie Olsen, eight grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.

The Sandell family has shared that a memorial service celebrating his life will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, January 24, at Mariners Church, Little Chapel, located at 5001 Newport Coast Drive in Irvine. Members of the El Monte Union community are welcome to attend.

The District extends its deepest condolences to the Sandell family and all those whose lives were touched by his leadership, service and legacy.

Thank you.
