Earlier this year, longtime educator and El Monte High School’s social science teacher Sara Quezada was named El Monte Union High School District’s Teacher of the Year. Now, she is the recipient of the Bobby Salcedo Esperanza Award, which recognizes educators who embody the late Salcedo’s spirit of hope, service, and commitment to the greater El Monte community.

For 37 years, Quezada has inspired thousands of students through her steady mentorship and student-centered approach. Her connection to Salcedo goes back to their time teaching together at South El Monte High School; she remembers him as a charismatic, energetic educator who built strong relationships with students and families.

Over the years, Quezada said what stood out most to her was Salcedo’s unwavering love for the community he grew up in and how he intentionally chose to serve throughout his career.

“Bobby lived in the community, worked in the community, and never left,” Quezada said.

In her own classroom, Quezada strives to cultivate ‘esperanza’ — or hope — by teaching students that learning is shaped by trial, persistence, and gradual progress. She reminds them that setbacks are “just a moment in time,” not a measure of their potential, and emphasizes that dedication and consistency ultimately move them toward their goals.

“Students grow when they work together,” Quezada said. “No one succeeds alone. That was something Bobby believed in, and it’s something I try to teach every day.”

Quezada said her teaching philosophy centers on collaboration, an approach she saw Salcedo model throughout his time at South El Monte. She structures her classes so students learn to support one another, building confidence and the sense of community she watched Salcedo cultivate.

“Sara Quezada embodies the qualities this award celebrates,” Superintendent Dr. Edward Zuniga said. “She inspires hope, encourages perseverance, and shows students the power of their own efforts. Her career is a true reflection of Bobby Salcedo’s legacy and we are incredibly proud to honor her.”
