Supporting Families Impacted by the Federal Government Shutdown

Dear El Monte Union Community,
We recognize that the ongoing federal government shutdown has brought uncertainty and hardship to many families, particularly those who rely on CalFresh for essential food support. The anticipated delay in benefits beginning Saturday, November 1 poses a serious concern for households that depend on these resources to meet daily needs.
Please know that you are not alone. Our District stands firmly with every student and family affected by this disruption, and we are committed to connecting our community with the support and information available to help during this time.
While CalFresh benefits are temporarily delayed, there are several free local and countywide programs available to assist families in accessing food and other essential resources:
- Local Food Pantries: Several community food pantries across the El Monte Union area are open to the public and provide free groceries for families in need. Flyers listing nearby locations and hours of operation are available in English, Spanish, Chinese, and Vietnamese at all school sites, including main offices and student support centers.
- Los Angeles Regional Food Bank: The Food Bank has expanded its services to meet growing needs this month. Families can find a nearby pantry by visiting lafoodbank.org/find-food/pantry-locator/ or by calling 2-1-1.
- WIC Program: All California WIC agencies remain open and are accepting new applicants. Pregnant individuals and families with children under five can apply online at www.startwic.org or text “APPLY” to 91997 for assistance.
- 211 LA County: Residents can call 2-1-1 or visit 211la.org for referrals to food, housing, health, and social service programs.
- Youth and Senior Meal Programs: Free evening meals are available for teens ages 12–18 through the County’s Free Hot Supper Program. Seniors can access free meal services through local senior centers by calling (800) 510-2020.
We know that moments like this test the resilience of our community, but they also remind us of our collective strength. Together, we can ensure that every student and family continues to feel supported, cared for, and connected to the resources they need.
If your family is affected by the delay in benefits, please contact your school’s Parent or Wellness Centers for additional information and assistance. Our staff are ready to help guide you to the right support services.
Sincerely,
Dr. Edward Zuniga
