Starting Safe and Strong: Welcome to the 2025-26 School Year

Posted Date: 8/14/25 (1:00 PM)

Dear El Monte Union Students and Families,

We are excited to welcome you back to campus for the 2025-26 school year, beginning Tuesday, August 19. This year is filled with opportunities to learn, grow, make new connections, and create lasting memories.

A strong school year starts on day one. We encourage all families to ensure students are in class and fully engaged from the first bell. Please note that the regular school day begins at 8:30 a.m. Arriving prepared sets the tone for success and helps students take advantage of every opportunity to build toward their goals right away.

We also understand that the ongoing immigration climate in our country has caused concern for many families in our community. We want to be clear: our schools are safe, inclusive spaces where every student is valued, supported, and protected.

At El Monte Union, the safety, well-being, and sense of belonging of every student are our highest priorities. Federal law guarantees every child the right to a public education, regardless of immigration status. State protections, including Assembly Bill 699, ensure that:

  • Immigration enforcement agents are not permitted on school campuses without a valid judicial warrant.
  • We do not collect or maintain information about immigration status, legal residency, or Social Security numbers.
  • Student and family information is confidential and cannot be shared for immigration enforcement purposes without a court order.

El Monte Union staff is trained to uphold these protections and respond with compassion and care to any concerns. All EMUHSD schools are closed campuses, and visitors must check in at the front office. Immigration enforcement is not permitted on school grounds without proper legal authority.

If your child is experiencing stress, fear, or anxiety, they can seek support from their guidance counselor or visit their school’s Wellness Center for help from our school-based mental health professionals. Families may also access legal aid, mental health support, and additional resources through organizations like the Coalition for Humane Immigrant RightsThe Los Angeles Trust for Children’s HealthPublic Counsel, and The California Department of Education’s Safe Havens Initiative.

If you are facing challenges or have concerns that may impact your return to school, call the District Support Line at (626) 406-1317 to connect with resources or discuss a learning plan tailored to your needs.

We stand in solidarity with our immigrant students and families, and we remain committed to keeping our schools places of safety, learning, and belonging. By showing up on time, staying engaged, and supporting one another each day, we can make this school year a success for all.

Sincerely,

Dr. Edward Zuniga
