FRLHS Awarded Model School Again in 2023
On April 28, 2023, Fernando R. Ledesma High School was awarded the title of Model Continuation High School for the fourth time in the school’s history. The designation is for three years. Staff, parents, students and community members worked together beginning in August of 2022 to complete the application process. In October of 2022, the school qualified for a visit to verify the application submitted and meet with all stakeholders. After discussions and verification were completed, the school was notified in the Spring of 2023 that they would be receiving the award in April of 2023 on the Midway in San Diego. School personnel, district administrators, and EMUHSD Board members traveled to San Diego to accept the award. Congratulations to the entire schoolwide community for the work you do to make FRLHS a model school for others to emulate.

Mock Trail
On Friday, October 11, 2024, the first quarter came to end culminating in the Mock-Trial Project for the government students. Mr. MacLellan worked diligently to teach the students about the various aspects of a court case, helping each student to complete the research necessary to master their particular role in the trial. Students became engrossed in the project preparing in their groups for the “murder trial,” each side hoping to be the victor. The trial was held after lunch in the gymnasium with many parents and district administrators attending the event. Students admitted to being quite nervous, wanting to do a good job. For many this would be the first time they would be speaking in such a large setting in front of over a hundred people. Mr. MacLellan and Mr. Doorn served as the judges on the case. The audience of students, parents, and staff members were captivated by the trial performances. All students did an exceptional job with the assignment and the verdict on the two counts came in a split decision, guilty of intent to sell drugs with a not guilty for the murder charge. It turned out to be a great day of engagement for all students as they got to see the Judicial System in action.

New Year - New Events in the FRLHS Gymnasium
This school year, the gymnasium has hosted many activities and events for the students, staff, parents and community. The FRLHS Multi-purpose Building is a two story facility that houses a weight room upstairs and a full gym downstairs. The EMUHSD held the professional development training Launch Program the week before school started. This was a great opportunity to have teachers and administrators from across the district visit the campus and share the school with them. Coffee with the Principal was held on September 26th. Parents, staff, and administrators met in the breezeway to discuss school goals and parent concerns. Parents were also given a tour of the school. Due to construction throughout the EMUHSD, the gym has been the home away from home for many of the students at all five of the district’s comprehensive high schools, hosting volleyball and basketball practices and games. Most recently, El Monte High School Girls Volleyball Team held their senior night. FRLHS senior presentations including “Seniors What’ Next?” have been hosted in the gym along with the Spirit Week Activities for promoting attendance. In the evenings, the gym has provided students of all ages in Jedi Wrestling with the opportunity to train in a safe environment. Jedi Wrestling is part of USA Wrestling and provides the youth of the community with the opportunity to train at no cost and develop skills they will use in high school and college sports. The FRLHS Gymnasium is not just a home for all of our Mustangs to use, we are happy to share the space with the greater El Monte community.
