     GRADING/WELLNESS

On behalf of the staff and administration of Fernando R. Ledesma High School (FRLHS), I hope this message finds you and your loved ones well and safe through these challenging times.  The El Monte Union High School District (EMUHSD) has taken every precaution possible to ensure continued support for all students at FRLHS. I’m writing to remind students that we are available and committed to supporting your academic and social/emotional needs. The EMUHSD continues to provide our school community with breakfast and lunch Monday through Friday at Arroyo, El Monte, and South El Monte High Schools. Our counselors continue to be available to support our students’ counseling needs.

FRLHS students need to continue to work on their classes through Distance Learning (on-line) to receive a passing grade. FRLHS students received their final grades of the third quarter on March 13, 2020. The fourth quarter, or last FRLHS quarter, started on March 16, 2020, this is the same day we started Distance Learning/on-line classes. As of March 16, 2020, all FRLHS students started brand new classes, which means students did not have a grade on the day Distance Learning began. District policy states that students with grades below 60% in this final grading period (fourth quarter) of spring semester who are not engaged in Distance Learning will be considered in danger of not receiving credit for the course.  At this time we are taking direction from the State of California which mandates that this fourth quarter we must grade you using a credit/no credit system, rather than giving out traditional letter grades. You must request additional work from your individual teachers if you are attempting to earn a grade of “A” or “B.”

The school has set up a schedule to help you organize your classes, assignments, and questions for teachers.

As your principal, I encourage you to stay connected to your teachers and support services provided for you. Students need to continue to work on and complete school assignments demonstrating competency for classes in which they are currently enrolled. Teachers have been continuously available to students since Distance Learning began via email, phone calls and google hangout/meetings.  PREP is also providing tutoring Monday-Thursday 11am-6pm in Math, English, History and general courses. Para-educators/Instructional aides continue to provide support via weekly phone calls and appointments for one-on-one assistance. The FRLHS staff remains committed to your success in Distance Learning.  Please continue to be productive as there is only about one month left before the regular school year comes to an end.  Stay safe and we look forward to the day we can get back to our “normal” schedule.
