• Welcome to our Reopen and Reimagine Schools website El Monte Union students, families and staff. Looking ahead to fall 2020, we understand that the question of what school will look like once it reopens on Aug. 18 is one many in our community are asking right now.

EMUHSD's Reopen and Reimagine Schools The education, safety, and well-being of our students continue to be our top priority. We value our stakeholders' input, the results of our reopening of schools surveys can be found here. The feedback from these various stakeholder surveys will help us provide the very best educational programs to meet your child’s needs and help us anticipate staffing needs for the various options.

In the meantime, I would like to inform you that we are in the planning stages for the 2020-21 school year and are working with our El Monte Union Reopening of Schools Task Force (RSTF) – which includes principals, teachers, classified staff, parents and students – to design a plan that meets the needs of all students. The plan will include different scenarios that will allow for adaptability to an ever-changing environment. We understand this will not be an easy task, but we are optimistic that the work of our RSTF will successfully prevail.

To help guide our efforts to create safe learning environments for all students and staff, we are working with the California Health Department, which has released initial guidelines for re-opening schools; the Los Angeles County Office of Education, which released its planning framework; and the LA County Department of Public Health, which will soon release guidance for schools within the county. We anticipate several more updates over the next few weeks.

We plan to reopen our schools as normal on Aug. 18 for students and staff who can safely return. We are evaluating all school operations and facilities, including classroom usage, methods of transportation, and preparation of student meals. As the guidelines continue to evolve, adjustments will be made for EMUHSD’s reopening of school plans. Specific plans for the distancing of students, cleaning of classrooms and equipment, and testing and tracing protocols will be released later this summer.

We have shared our tentative plans and options for teaching and learning in fall 2020 during a virtual community forum which was held on Monday, June 29. The meeting in its entirety can be viewed here along with all the questions that were submitted during the event which the district has provided answers to.

We want to thank everyone – students, teachers, parents, administrators and community partners – for your amazing strength in getting through an exceedingly difficult spring. This crisis has proven the resilience of our community and their determination to rise to a challenge in support of our students.

We will continue to share new information as we get closer to the fall. On behalf of the Board of Education, we would like to thank you for your continued support of our schools. We all look forward to having a healthy and much-deserved summer and returning in the fall and reunite as a school community.

    Sincerely,

    Dr. Edward A. Zuniga
