Just a reminder that this message was shared with all staff on Friday evening. Please take a moment to review it and remain vigilant in supporting both students and colleagues. Report any suspicious activity to your site administration immediately.
Dear El Monte Union Summer School Faculty and Staff,
Welcome to the start of our 2025 summer school session. Thank you for your continued dedication to our students and your commitment to our school community.
Our collective goal this summer is to ensure that every student has equitable access to learning, strong relationships with trusted adults, and the support they need to thrive, both academically and emotionally. Your role in this work is vital, and I am deeply grateful for you being part of our team.
We affirm that all students are welcome, protected, and valued on our campuses, regardless of their immigration status or background. Our commitment is to maintain a safe, respectful, and inclusive learning environment where every student feels seen, heard, and supported.
We are aware of recent ICE activity in the region, which has understandably caused fear and anxiety in many of our families. I ask that we remain mindful and sensitive to the emotional needs of our students, some of whom may be directly impacted or may have family and friends who are. Please avoid making assumptions or inquiring about a student’s or family’s immigration status. Empathy and discretion are essential.
Please be reminded of the District’s protocol regarding law enforcement agencies, including ICE:
ICE agents are not permitted on school grounds without a judicial warrant signed by a judge.
If approached by law enforcement, do not engage directly. Instead, immediately notify your site principal or the designated administrator.
Do not release student or family information to any outside agency.
We ask that you always report any suspicious activity to the school administration or by using the District's "Tipped Off" online anonymous reporting program, which can be found on the District's website.
Your classrooms should reflect a welcoming environment that celebrates student diversity. Strategies such as group-building activities can promote a positive, inclusive, and safe learning environment for all.
If a student shares concerns or if you observe worrisome behavior, acknowledge their feelings and promptly notify an administrator. Our wellness coordinators are also available to support students experiencing stress, anxiety, or emotional changes.
Many of our families may need assistance during this time. Please familiarize yourself with the resources available on our website.
We are in this together. Keep communication open, report concerns through the appropriate channels, and lean on one another for support. Above all, let’s ensure that every student feels safe, valued, and cared for while on our campuses.
Thank you again for your support. I wish you a successful summer school experience.
Sincerely,
Edward A. Zuniga, Ed.D
Superintendent
