Parent Involvement Academy Engages EMUHSD Parents in Student Success

PARENT ACADEMY

Nearly 1,000 parents, administrators, teachers and community members gathered on March 1 for the 23rd annual Parent Involvement Academy, hosted by a consortium of eight educational organizations, including El Monte Union, to support parent engagement and involvement in their children’s success.

The conference – themed “Write your own future” and held at the Pacific Palms Resort – featured workshops on such topics as the 21st century classroom, college requirements and financial aid, mental and health wellness, self-esteem and daily mindfulness, and building family engagement.

“This academy is so important to parent engagement,” said presenter and South El Monte High instructional coach Kent Besocke. “I want to empower parents who are putting their children through school to have expectations of the teachers.”

The consortium includes El Monte Union, Bassett Unified, Rowland Unified, Montebello Unified, El Monte City, Garvey and Mountain View school districts and the Los Angeles County Office of Education.

Arroyo High School parent Santiago Avila has attended the conference with his wife for six years, starting when their children were attending El Monte City School District schools.

“There’s so much education, information and resources provided through these workshops, and it has helped us guide our children,” he said.

About 150 participants from El Monte Union attended. Transportation was provided.

“Parents are the foundation of their child’s success in school, so it is critical for them to involved every step of the way, whether it’s by attending parent conferences or workshops to understand what their child might be going through,” Superintendent Dr. Edward Zuniga said. “I want to thank our parents for their involvement, encouragement and support of their child’s education.”
