El Monte Union High School District (EMUHSD) students embraced their leadership and teamwork skills during the District’s annual Leadership Development Day event, held April 21 at the Fernando R. Ledesma High School gymnasium.

In keeping with the event’s theme – inspired by the Pixar film “Inside Out” – each school was assigned an emotion to represent; Arroyo High School represented the character “Sadness,” El Monte High School represented “Anger,” Mountain High School was selected as “Imagination and Innocence,” Rosemead High School students wore green for “Disgust,” South El Monte High School represented the “Self-Conscious” and Ledesma students represented “Fear.”

Students also crafted hand-painted posters featuring their assigned character, and the campus was decorated with the movie’s vibrant color scheme.

Hosted by the EMUHSD Student Advisory Council (SAC) and in collaboration with California Association of Student Leaders (CASL), the event featured a series of critical thinking activities led by CASL representative Edgar Blackmon, who encouraged students to break out of their shells and put their leadership skills to the test.

El Monte Union’s neighboring middle school districts – including Valle Lindo, Mountain View, Rosemead and El Monte City – were also invited to participate in the fun.

Activities included dance challenges to practice courage, puzzles for a new perspective and a creative fashion challenge where students designed outfits for a team member using colorful poster paper. Throughout the event, teams cheered each other on, creating a spirit of healthy competition and connection among participants.
