El Monte Union Performing Arts Showcase Brings Together District Community
South El Monte High School’s Drill Team represent their school with a spectacular performance during the El Monte Union High School District’s Annual Performing Arts Showcase on March 3.
The El Monte community came together in a sea of colors, beats, and interpretive dance during the annual El Monte Union Performing Arts Indoor Showcase, held on March 3 at the El Monte High School gym.
Dozens of students from all five El Monte Union comprehensive high schools displayed their creative talents, dazzling a packed house of friends and family, who responded with applause, foot stomps and cheers.
The impressive student-led showcase highlighted a diverse range of artistic skills, from the simplicity of El Monte High School’s five-person drumline to the elaborate set pieces and psychedelic costumes of the Rosemead High School color guard.
Among the groups performing were the El Monte High drumline and color guard; the South El Monte High percussion, color guard and drill team; the Mountain View High School percussion, color guard and drill team; the Rosemead High School color guard and winter winds; and the Arroyo High School cheer and indoor percussion group, which closed the show with a fascinating take on classic Greek mythology.
Rosemead High School’s Winter Winds give a stellar performance during the El Monte Union High School District’s Annual Performing Arts Showcase on March 3.
Arroyo High percussionists presented an intricate staging of “Sisyphus,” bringing together a wealth of instruments, including vibraphones, keyboards, bass guitar and a variety of marching drums for their spin on the Greek tale, which centers on a king punished by the gods to push a huge rock up a hill for all eternity. In the Arroyo version, a student portraying Sisyphus futilely attempts to push a bass drum up a ramp.
“The performing arts showcase is really all about letting the students show off their hard work and creativity, and we are proud to host it here,” El Monte High principal Eddie Cuevas said. “The performances display originality and heart. Thank you to all who made the showcase a memorable night, especially the coaches, parents and volunteers who support our kids.”
