A Message from the Superintendent Regarding Vaccination Mandate

Dear El Monte Union High School District community,

El Monte Union is committed to providing a safe and secure learning environment for all of our students and staff. On Oct. 6, the Board of Trustees directed the District to require that all eligible students who are 12 years of age and older be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 by Jan. 3 to continue to take part in on-site instruction. Student athletes must be fully vaccinated by Nov. 19.

To be considered fully vaccinated, two weeks must have passed after receiving the second dose of the vaccine.

Adding vaccination for COVID-19 to the existing vaccine requirements for our students ensures that we can safely continue offering the highest-quality public instruction, rigorous in-person learning, and extracurricular activities on our campuses that promote the growth and development of our students.

We are committed to our ongoing efforts to provide vaccination opportunities for our school community. Vaccinations are always free and open to eligible residents and workers regardless of immigration status. Anyone 12 years of age and older living or working in L.A. County can get vaccinated.  Visit: www.VaccinateLACounty.com (English) and www.VacunateLosAngeles.com (Spanish) to find a vaccination site near you, make an appointment at vaccination sites, and much more.

Families who choose not to vaccinate their student have the option to enroll them in the District’s Online Personalized Learning program to continue their coursework remotely. This program provides students with the same content available in the District’s comprehensive high schools through an online independent study curriculum. Information on the District’s Independent Study program will be provided to all families next week.

The COVID-19 global pandemic continues to impact nearly every aspect of our daily lives. EMUHSD prioritizes the health and well-being of our students and staff and will remain vigilant in adhering to the latest state and county health and safety guidelines for schools. For anyone who may still have concerns, we will be providing more information including a Q&A in the near future. We are keeping our students and staff members safe with data-driven decisions to implement proven best practices. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, we thank you for your ongoing partnership and support as we continue to navigate through the challenges presented by COVID-19.

Sincerely,

Edward Zuniga, Ed.D.

Superintendent
